Mission of NMPHI

NMIPHI seeks to increase knowledge about disease prevention measures by changing the way New Mainers think about diseases and by promoting healthy habits.

Our Objectives:

  • To greatly increase health information about the Maine Immigrants community and to better understand the community’s needs and healthcare barriers
  • To empower the New Mainers Public Health Initiative (NMPHI) to overcome barriers to good healthcare by building on existing assets and strengths within the community
  • To build health care capacity within the Maine Immigrants community by forming a New Mainers Public Health Initiative (NMPHI) Health Educator who will assist refugees and immigrants patients in accessing healthcare and who will impart key preventive health messages
  • To increase the level of knowledge and awareness in the Maine Immigrants Public Health Initiative about key health issues and to improve overall access to healthcare
  • To increase the cultural competence of healthcare providers with an emphasis on refugees’ and immigrants’ religions, traditions, and cultural beliefs and how these affect perceptions and expectations.
  • To develop culturally appropriate health education materials to effectively communicate preventive health messages to the New Mainers
  • To share resources and materials with health care providers, the New Mainers Public Health Initiative (NMPHI), and relevant agencies throughout Maine to increase overall awareness of the health of the refugees
